25. Food Technology (2)

Kia Ora, Reader! On my last blog I said I’d update ya’ll with Food Technology. Well, we made sushi and here’s how it went.

When we walked in the building, immediately the aroma of food hit us. The Smell of sushi was everywhere, assuming the people who previously cooked before us made sushi.

We started off writing our names behind roles, the roles being – Sous Chef, Kitchen Porter, and Kitchen Hand. Sous Chef is in charge of the kitchen, Telling each people what to do, and keeping up with them. Kitchen Porter, is responsible for following the Sous Chef, for example, if the Sous Chef  asks you to dice onions, as the kitchen porter, you dice the onions. Then lastly, the Kitchen Hand is known for cleaning, washing the dishes and making sure the kitchen is safe by cleaning spills, they too can help with cooking however.

I was Sous Chef, My two other friends, Susana and Sala, were Kitchen Porter and Kitchen Hand. Our teacher, Whaea Leigh, made us watch this video showcasing how to make sushi properly. They showed how to lather rice on your seaweed properly, you have to dip your fingers in water so the rice doesn’t stick to your fingers and soothe it around. Then they showed how to align the ingredients, it has to be horizontal. Now all your ingredients are in, you roll the sushi once then apply a lot of pressure onto it by squishing, so the sushi can be dense, then roll again and apply pressure. Now you’re done your sushi should look like a long cylinder. Using a wet knife, you slowly saw through the roll giving you your first sushi roll. Heres the exact video for more info, Skip to minutes 3:05 LINK

We started by slicing Cucumber and raw Chicken (WITH SEPARATE KNIFES), then we did the rice, by adding a teaspoon of vinegar into it. One of our pupils, Susana had to fry the chicken using condiments I’m not sure of, Then our kitchen hand, Sala, was washing our dishes. I was preparing for the rolling, adding seaweed onto our rolling  sushi thingy. When rolling, it wasn’t that hard because I’m experienced with rolling sushi with my whanau, but I fumbled because I didn’t apply as much pressure which caused a lil turbulence between my sushi with some ingredients falling out. But our presentation was fantastic! I loved  it. I would rate the taste a 5/5 and the difficulty a 3.4/5.

Fantastic, Thank you Technology, and thank you for reading!

25. Food Technology

Kia Ora, Reader! On week 1, Monday, we had Tech, like we always do every casual Monday afternoon, But it was different because it’s a new term which means we are in different technologies.

My group (Group 1) was assigned to Food Technology and we learnt all the basics of being in the kitchen. We wrote on paper to identify some of the pictures it had, being cooking skills, then the next paper we had to identify the accidents that happen (Like burns or slips). Then we learnt how to be safe when in the kitchen, here are the basics – Always wear short sleeves or roll your sleeves up so it doesn’t catch on fire, tie your hair back (If you have long hair), keep your hands clean (!), If you accidentally create a spill clean it up immediately before you slip, don’t mix water and boiling oil apparently that ignites a fire, then lastly If anything from you gets caught on fire, which are most likely to be your clothes or your hair, Stop what you’re doing and drop flat on the floor then roll, that’ll extinguish the fire.

Anyways, besides those, today we are going to make sushi, but we’re using chicken as an alternative to fish, since with fish we’re not very experienced with, which could potentially lead us to food poisoning if we used it!! (Unless you’re trained)  – Anyways, can’t wait, I’ll be there to update you!

Baking!

Kia Ora, Reader!

Yesterday on Tuesday was very exciting, we baked something. I’m not saying exactly what we’ve made, you have to guess what we’ve baked judging off by reading. Challenge starting now!

All 4 groups were told to gather five people each, one group had four because there were not an even numbers of us. We then received a recipe for each group, and were given a huge plastic bag as a bowl and a marker to write on the plastic bag to know it was ours.

On the recipe it instructed us to get 4 weetbix slices, which Sala (Someone in my group) added in the big plastic bag using gloves. Then Keiti added 1 cup of flour and half a cup of white sugar in our “bowl”  together with the weetbix. Sharlet proceeded to add 1 teaspoon of baking powder and I eventually added 1 tablespoon of Cocoa Powder into our mixture of dry ingredients, then sealed the bag for Sharlet and Susana to mix by crushing and shaking the bag from the outside without touching the ingredients.

Now for the wet ingredients, we opened the bag after constant crunching and shaking and made a hole in the middle which we call a “Well” because it’s similar to a water well or some sort. The well was made for the wet ingredients to be put inside. I wasn’t there to experience them adding in the wet ingredients because I was told to take photos of other groups but I’m pretty sure they melted 150 grams of butter in a microwave for 1 minute, then poured it in the well then added half a teaspoon of vanilla essence and mixed it.

After our mixture, we went to the Hall where the kitchen was to bake things, before entering the Hall, we had items to create a bag for our baking. Using brown paper, we watched a video to create a bag waiting for our teacher to add our ingredients in the oven. She put it in for 20 minutes – which was supposed to be 10 but someone told her 20 minutes, and preheated it for 180 degrees, then fan baked it. After everyone was finished creating bags, and everyone’s baking was complete, we sat in a vertical line in our groups, then calling from 1 – 4 by groups, we each received our food. Unfortunately, we didn’t have icing sugar to create icing for finishing touches, so we ate it plain which is okay!

– UNFORTUNATELY, my group’s food was burnt (!), it was either due to how thin it was when added in the tray, or the oven was too hot – But only the bottom was burnt and the top was completely fine. But its okay, it was still good.

Thank you for reading! Sadly, our teacher left her Ipad at home, which had the photos, so I’m not able to show photos at the moment. I’ll try to update you!

Anyway, I think we did a good job baking for the first time, despite burning it, that was just a small rookie mistake we’ll definitely fix next time we bake again.

What do you think we’ve baked? I think you already have an idea of what we’ve made. ☺ Let me know!!!

Good-Bye for now. 👋🙂
